Saving Money on Food

Food is generally the NUMBER 1 THING people want to save money on. Why not? We eat it everyday, and if you have teenagers, you probably need more than most! So how can you save money on food with coupons? There are a few different options for you!

Most coupons ARE for pre-packaged food, but that doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthy! In fact, there are lots of healthy food coupons out there!

Buy canned or frozen veggies. Green Giant is one manufacturer that offers coupons on a consistent basis. These are just as healthy as fresh veggies.

Buy bagged salad. Fresh Express is a newer brand, and they were running various promotions recently. I got a coupon for a free bag of salad along with 4 $1 coupons!

Fruit cups and fruit in a can are another healthy option. Dole offers coupons for these.

Buy in-season foods. They are going to be cheaper. The foods that are in season are usually going to be on the first page of the sale ad.

Go to this map to see what is in season in your area.

Plan meals around produce that’s on sale or what you have on hand already! Winter is a great time for soups and stews, and you can usually make them with whatever you have in your pantry already. Pastas, beans and vegetables are great for different kinds of soups.

Buy less meat and more vegetables! Use vegetables to stretch your meat dishes. For example, if you are making a pot roast, buy a smaller cut, and make more roasted vegetables.

Don’t buy pre-cut veggies! It seems convenient in time, but it’s extremely inconvenient for your wallet! Take the extra 5 or 10 minutes to wash and cut your vegetables!

Buy produce from local farmers and vendors.

Shop farmer’s markets at the end of the day.

Make your own fruit salad. Buying packaged fruit salad can be extremely expensive.

Grind your own meat. Invest in a good meat grinder, or if you have a KitchenAid stand mixer, get the food grinder attachment. You can grind up meat for meatballs, burgers or tacos in no time!

Buy reduced price meat.

Buy cheaper cuts of meat.

Buy bigger packages and freeze the leftovers.

Eat less meat!

Most coupons for meat are available around the four major “meat eating” holidays. Hot dog coupons are available before Memorial Day and 4th of July. Ham and Turkey coupons are available before Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Packaged meat coupons are readily available. (Sara Lee, Butterball, etc.)

New to Couponing?

Here are some tips if you are new to couponing.

  • You CAN get stuff for free, but you WILL pay sales tax.
  • DO NOT PHOTOCOPY COUPONS!!!!! This is illegal!
  • Coupons are not cash. But you can treat them as if they are 😉
  • Break away from product loyalty! You will miss out on great deals if you do not try something new.
  • This takes time! You will not 70% your first shopping trip. But you CAN save that much once you get the hang of it!
  • If you are going to use Facebook or Twitter, log on more than once a week! Try logging on once a day to see what the latest deals are.
  • Sale ads are released about 4 days before the sale starts.
  • Check you store’s coupon policy.
  • Check the ads and compare prices.
  • Make a list!!!!
  • Match ads to your coupons. Use online matchups to make it easier. I like Living Rich with Coupons and The Krazy Coupon Lady.
  • Use store coupons WITH manufacturer coupons!
  • Factor in Register Rewards (RR from Walgreens), +UP Rewards (from Rite Aid) or Extra Care Bucks (ECB from CVS). Once you figure those in with your coupons and sale price, you will see what you are paying.
  • You cannot have more coupons than items. If you have 5 bags of candy, you can’t have 6 coupons. Use a “filler item”. This is a small item (under 99 cents) that can help you have the same amount of coupons as items.
  • Use coupons in the clearance section! Walgreens, Rite Aid and Target all have markdowns on various items. You can use coupons on those items to maximize your savings!
  • Roll your transactions! Especially at drugstores! This means, breaking up your purchase into several smaller purchases. Get rewards (from Walgreens, Rite Aid, CVS, etc.) from one purchase, and use them on the next purchase.

Prizes, Gift Cards and Money

There are a lot of sites out there that offer ways to get gift cards, money and prizes. Which ones work?

Sign up, refer friends and read the daily email they send. That’s it. No surveys, no hassle. I haven’t won anything yet, but I know people who have! They have daily prizes of gift cards and some major prizes as well.

Get free full sized product samples! I got a free fabric softener in the mail. It’s so easy! All you have to do is review the product when you are done!

By far, the EASIEST way to make money online! Watch videos, complete short surveys and watch the money add up on your Jingit Visa Debit Card! Pays INSTANTLY!

Another great site where you can earn points. You can then redeem those points for gift cards and merchandise! Search, watch videos, complete tasks, and complete offers to get the most points!

SuperPoints is BY FAR, my favorite site. Spin the lucky button, complete offers and invite friends. I’ve cashed out $60 in gift cards already! The following invites are one per person, and expire after one week.

Another moneymaking site where you complete offers and surveys to get points.

Once again, surveys and offers for points. You can redeem for gift cards.
